How important is a fast loading website

By Thomson Chemmanoor
There are many instances one experiences while on the internet of waiting endlessly for a website to get downloaded from the internet. You click on a page and wait for hours; it seems, for the page to download. So what do you do then? Not write a letter or read the paper, but you of course, close that page and go on to another page that loads faster so that you can move on with your work without having to wait unnecessarily.

This is the most important reason one should have a fast loading website. People nowadays don’t have the time to waste waiting for a page to download from the website. Everything has to be done instantly; cooking, traveling and of course, the download of a page.

So when you do intend to create a website, do remember to create a website that loads fast so that you can capture the attention of the readers. The shorter the download time of a website, the higher the chance of you getting more traffic to your website. One-time visitors are bound to visit another time if you provide them a website that doesn’t keep them waiting. Most of the internet users find what they want on the internet using keywords. One just has to type the required keywords to get thousands of related pages on whatever subject is required there. However, even if your website is placed somewhere in the first few ranking orders of a search engine, if your site takes too long to download, you won’t get the sales that you would expect from a number one ranking website. So remember, your page should be one that automatically appears without any waiting or loading or by giving some hassles to the user. Most of the world still use dial up service for the internet.

So this takes them an even longer time to download pages form the Internet. So if your website downloads slowly, plus the slow speed of the dial up service, people from these areas will definitely not be patient enough to wait through the whole downloading process. Just imagine a person who was ready to spend thousands of dollars in a huge buying spree from your company, but decides to approach another company as their website downloaded faster than yours and thus entitled the person to buy from their company!
There are many ways of minimizing the disk size of a web page to make it load quicker. First and foremost, you could stick with plain HTML while designing web pages and not abuse text formatting with special effects. The more special effects like flickering and blinking lights there are in a web page, the longer it takes for the page to download. Try to avoid high tech terms and long sentences on the website, as not all readers are tech savvy. Use short sentences to minimize the size of the webpage. Try as much as possible to limit the size of the graphics on the website to below 1 KB. In this way the graphic will load almost instantly due to the way the TCP IP protocol transfers data. Another point to remember is that instead of using single pages with large amounts of information, it will be better to split your website into small sized sections to save time in downloading.
Even when it comes to Search Engine Optimization, it is better to have quick loading web pages. This is because even though the search engine may spend some time in the first visit to access the content of your page, it will be able to access the same page faster the next time. So it can be said that in terms of website optimization and web efficiency, one has to try as much as possible to ensure that the web pages load quickly for the visitor’s convenience and the web master’s benefit.
