Advertising on the internet has reached new heights with banner advertising. Almost all websites have one form or the other of banner advertising on it. However, there are a few things that have to be kept in mind to get maximum income for webmasters through banners.
The most important thing that has to be remembered is to use as small a .gif or .jpg file for the banner as possible. This is because the larger the file is, the longer it takes for it to download thus making the potential visitor scroll down the page without seeing the banner.
|
If people don’t see the banner, they will obviously not click on it! So try to keep your file at a capacity of below 10K or 15K at the most. It is always better to use call to action together with the banner so that the CTR (click through rate) of the banner increases. Using a call to action means only adding the phrases ‘click here’ or perhaps ‘sign up now’ on the banners so that the visitor knows they have to do so to move ahead on the site. Use some animation on the banner as it is a proven fact that banners with moving elements tend to attract the eye more than static banners do. However, remember to keep the animation file small lest the visitor gets annoyed having to wait for the downloading of the file! Make it a point to use text in the banner that emphasizes more on the benefits of your product, and not on the features of the product or service. Similarly, use words like ‘free, secret and proven’ in the text as they have always proven to attract people.

Nowadays people tend to incorporate some sort of fake factor in their successful banners. Fake factors are fake scroll bars, fake text boxes, fake submit buttons or fake selection boxes are used, where banners hold these fake factors in themselves. People then tend to click on them through a button, when in reality, they are actually clicking o a banner with a picture of a button and text link. |

After designing banners, place the banner on sites that cater for your target audience. Obviously there is no point in putting a banner of a new golf club you sell on a site that is dedicated to software! Remember, to get the right advertising message, it is always better to define goals for your campaign. Ask yourself questions as to when you intend to accomplish this campaign and the action you want online users to take on seeing your ad. On getting these answers, you are bound to get the perfect advertising text for your banner! To give yourself ideas, you can always study the best online examples. On looking at the different banner ads, try to identify three banner ads that catch your interest and attention. Then see what is common in these ads and thus get an idea on the design idea that appeals most to you to use in the banner! Always be clear in your graphics and messaging as the main purpose of the banner is to have people to take action on viewing your ad. While writing out the text, remember to use seven or less words for it. This is especially important as you are limited to a small visual space. Not only that, using less words in the banner means that you can increase the size of the font, and thus enhance the impact of your message.

The best way to capture the attraction of the audience is to use contrast between the background colors, bold text message and animation. Contrast is achieved using different font sizes and bolds and colors. Limit the usage of fonts in the banner ad. Try not to use more than two fonts, but if you do use more than two fonts, make sure they are from different categories. The different font categories in web designing are serif, sans serif and decorative. Keep all these points in mind in the next banner advertisements you create, and you are bound to practically drag visitors to your banner!
