Benefits of sports

Sports benefits

By Thomson Chemmanoor
Sports come in both the outdoor and indoor form. There are many indoor sports that use only mental agility like chess, billiards and carom, some indoor sports demanding energy like table tennis and gymnastics and many outdoor sports that use brains, like archery, golf and shooting, and many outdoor sports that use both brains and brawns like tennis, football, hockey and swimming. It is always good for everyone to participate in one sport or the other for overall physical and mental fitness of the body.

Sports are considered as a form of relaxation for some, and a form of competition to others. In joining some form of sport, you get overall fitness with the training and playing needed with the sport. Playing with a partner gives a better kick to sports as you don’t get too bored playing by yourself, and there is always the competitive spirit that grows between the two of you. Of the lot, team sports are the most beneficial sport. You learn the feeling of sportsmanship and team work in team sports like football, cricket and rugby. You learn to give and take orders in the game.

Most of the teams have a captain in them. It is up to the captain to make the necessary orders for the winning of the game. Of course, this is only possible if the other players willingly contribute to the game, by giving their heart and soul to the game. There should not be a feeling of one player being supreme in the team. It is only through the combined efforts of all the players can teams win. In the case of solo sports like tennis and badminton, the health benefits are the same, if not more, as in team sports. But if there is a win, then the win is solitary. It is only through the hard work and dedications of that single player can a win materialize.

While playing sports, you help in building your body up by reducing body fat, keep physically fit and looking good while the endodorphins “feel good” chemicals get released into the body. These chemicals are released by the brain after prolonged high intensity exercise. Running is a sport that produces the most endodorphins, and so runners usually experience something called ‘runner’s high’ while running! Those who maintain a constant sport activity seem to be quicker, faster and more agile than those who are not enthusiastic about sports.

It is advisable for young children to participate in sports in a young age as they then quickly learn hand-eye coordination and concentration; which are two of the most important developments in childhood. Children also learn discipline, gain self-confidence and gain critical thinking skills and sharp cognitive abilities through sports. We now see that sports are beneficial to both adults and children, and are something everyone should participate in!
