Tips on creating an effective newsletter

Newsletters can be divided into two kinds of newsletters; those that get read, and those that get tossed away! It is through the design and content of the newsletter that learn where your newsletter stands!
Frame your newsletter’s name so that it grabs the attention of the reader. Most companies like to focus the newsletter title on the company name; however, it is better to focus on something that will grab the attention of readers. Never write articles for the newsletter that makes it look like a sales brochure. A newsletter should be a soft sell, while providing useful information to the readers. Too much sales hype leads to the tossing of the newsletter! Write articles for the newsletter objectively, while basing articles on factual information. |
The main objective of the newsletter is to communicate information to the reader. This objective will not be met if difficult words are used in the articles, which send readers scrambling for dictionaries! Try to keep your writing as casual, nontechnical and conversational as possible. If you use acronyms in your newsletter, never assume that the readers know what they stand for; list them out! To make the newsletter look as impressive as possible, it is important to have it free of typos and grammatical errors. Proofreading, revising and rewriting the article will only help attain this. Though these may be the most tedious parts of the writing process, they are the most necessary parts!

Create a front page layout that will draw in maximum readers by using articles that are most interesting to them. However, remember that it is not always the articles that are important to your company, which will be important to the average consumer! Try to place at least one graphic per page, like photos, artwork, charts or a colored box, behind an article. This is because people tend to read an article with a graphic, as they provide much-needed visual breaks from blocks of text! Sometimes photos will look muddy in the final product; so use image-editing software like Adobe PhotoShop to edit the color, contrast and brightness of these photos. |

The newsletter is always competing with colorful magazines, publications and newspapers. This is the reason for the need of adding at least one accent color to the newsletter’s design. By using tints of your newsletter’s inks, you can print more colors for no extra cost! It is always better to give your printshop your electronic computer file to print from as this produces sharper photos, graphics and smoother tints. And to keep your environment conscious readers happy, it is better to use recycled paper for your newsletter. There is very little difference between recycled and virgin paper nowadays, so why not use recycled paper? The actual recycled papers are the ones with a post-consumer-fiber percentage lying between 10-50 percent. And if you use recycled paper, let your readers know this fact by printing a message at the bottom of the page or in the masthead! Now sit back and look at your effective newsletter with style!
